How to get from Halong Bay to Hanoi?

Is your camera filled with magnificent views of Halong Bay? Time to head back to Hanoi to explore the rest of this beautiful country!

The best way to travel the 175km distance from Halong Bay to Hanoi is by bus. This bus journey takes 3.5 hours and costs $14. Alternatively, you can also go by train, taxi or travel in style by seaplane.

4 ways to get from Halong Bay to Hanoi

The bus is the most common way to travel from Halong Bay to Hanoi. Thanks to the newly-opened Halong – Hai Phong Expressway, you can now complete this journey 2 hours faster than before.

Taking the train is the cheapest option at $3.50, but it can take up to 7 hours and the train only has hard seats.

Traveling with a group? You can get a 5-seater taxi for $73.50. Rideshare is also available and you can travel door-to-door.

Hai Au also operates seaplane journeys from Halong Bay to Hanoi. If you have dollars to spare and want to see beautiful Vietnam from a bird’s eye view, you can travel via seaplane for $240.

Halong Bay to Hanoi by Bus

Traveling by bus or limo van is the preferred choice when going from Halong Bay to Hanoi. It’s quite cheap and and quicker than the train.

Most companies take the newly-opened Halong – Hai Phong Expressway and that cuts the travel time in half.

Each bus company has its own designated departure and arrival points so check in advance which bus stops close to your accommodation. Or even better, choose a limo van that includes free pick-up and drop-off! They are more expensive than buses, but a lot cheaper than a taxi!

If you are thinking of saving some money on your booking, make sure you double-check the drop-off point. You can for example book a cheaper ticket with Kumho Viet Thanh, but at the end, you won’t really save money with this.

A bus ticket with Kumho costs only 160,000 VND ($7). But it takes about 45min to go to Hanoi city center from the drop-off point. The costs of a taxi will make this option actually more expensive than taking a limo van.

Halong Bay to Hanoi by Limo Van

Want something more comfortable than a bus? You’re in luck as there are also limo van trips available from Halong Bay to Hanoi. With a limo van, you can travel this journey in only 2.5 hours for 370,000 VND ($16). Most companies offer free pick-up and drop-off service. This, by far, is the cheapest option when travelling from Halong Bay to Hanoi. However, it also takes almost double the time compared to the bus. Another downside is that there is only one direct trip per day which departs at 13:45. With this trip, you will reach Hanoi at 20:31. Tickets cost 80,000 VND ($3.50) per person.

The train departs from Halong Train Station, east of Bai Chay. It arrives at Yen Vien Station, northeast of Hanoi city center.

Be informed that the train bound for Hanoi only has hard seats, so it may not be the most comfortable way to travel for 7 hours!

Halong Bay to Hanoi by Taxi

Duration: 2h 15min Cost: 1,700,000 VND ($73.50)

A taxi is a good option if you are travelling in a group. It’s a bit more expensive than a van, but the advantage of booking a taxi is that you can travel door-to-door and don’t have to share the taxi with others.

The price for a vehicle starts at 1,700,000 VND ($3.50) with pick-up and drop-off at any hotel for both ends of the route. This vehicle can seat up to 5 passengers and it takes 2h 15min before you reach Hanoi.

Luxury Transports Company also offers a rideshare option if you’re looking to save some money but prefer a car ride. It’s about 345,000 VND ($15) per person. The meeting place is at Sen A Dong Restaurant in the city center of Bai Chay and the drop-off point is at Tonkin Coffee in Hanoi city center or any hotel in Hoan Kiem district.

Halong Bay to Hanoi by Seaplane

Duration: 45 min Cost: 5,550,000 VND ($240)

Want to travel in style to Hanoi? Then try to book a seaplane ride and see for yourself what a great experience it is. Plus, the view from the top of Halong Bay is amazing.

Hai Au Aviation offers the option to book a seaplane ride. For a plane ride that doesn’t include a tour, the price of the ticket is 5,550,000 VND ($240). They have this flight leaving every day at 16:00. Planes depart from Tuan Chau Marina (southwest of Bai Chay) and arrive at Hanoi Airport.

Halong Bay to Hanoi by Helicopter

Going by helicopter is even more expensive than a seaplane ride, but it’ll probably be an experience you won’t forget. The price for a helicopter ride starts at 9,050,000 VND ($391), one-way. There are trips departing at 14:00 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and at 16:30 on Saturdays. Helicopters arrive at Gia Lam Airport, a little east of Hanoi city center.
